MODIFIED CLEFT LIP EVALUATION PROFILE (MCLEP) INDEX FOR UNILATERAL CLEFT LIP REPAIR OUTCOME ASSESSMENT IN SURABAYA CLP CENTER

Advancing Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair: Insights from Surabaya CLP Center

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are among the most common congenital anomalies, posing challenges for plastic surgeons in both reconstruction and outcome assessment. Our recent study conducted at Surabaya CLP Center aimed to evaluate the outcomes of unilateral cleft lip repair using the Modified Cleft Lip Evaluation Profile (MCLEP) index, shedding light on critical aspects of surgical success.

We included 38 patients who underwent unilateral cleft lip repair in 2017, ensuring complete photographic documentation at least 52 weeks post-surgery. The MCLEP index was employed to assess photographs, focusing on lip and nose aesthetics. Statistical analysis was performed to analyze the data and derive meaningful insights.

Key Findings:

  • Uniform Outcomes: Our study revealed consistent outcomes regardless of the completeness of the cleft lip or the presence of an alveolar cleft. This suggests that surgical techniques at Surabaya CLP Center achieve symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing results across different cleft lip variations.

  • Nose Aesthetics: Significant improvements were noted in total nose scores for repairs performed on the left side (p = 0.002), emphasizing the precision and efficacy of surgical interventions.

  • Palate Influence: Repairs conducted without a palate cleft showed notably better outcomes in both lip (p = 0.038) and nose scores (p = 0.008), highlighting the impact of anatomical considerations on surgical success.

Our findings underscore the effectiveness of unilateral cleft lip repair techniques practiced at Surabaya CLP Center. By utilizing the MCLEP index, we contribute to advancing surgical practices and enhancing patient outcomes in craniofacial surgery. This study not only provides valuable insights into optimizing surgical protocols but also emphasizes the importance of tailored approaches for individual patient needs.
